Barcelona is an unusually fun city where you can walk around the historical centre on foot. But if you want to truly feel the atmosphere of Spain, you need to drive... Drive to Montserrat to see the monastery and the city among the beautiful scenery, to the town of Sitges with a picturesque beachfront promenade, see the Dali Museum in Figueres, stop in a town of Tossa de Mar with a small fortress on the rock and lots of nice restaurants.
We recommend renting a car for such trips. Public transportation will not give you the feeling of complete freedom because you have to adjust to its schedule and routes. And taxi fares are expensive.
Renting a car at Barcelona Airport
El Prat airport is 14 km from Barcelona. It is most convenient to order a car to the airport by the time of your arrival.
With a rental car, you get the comfort right after you step on the land of Catalonia. You get rid of a lot of problems:
- how to get to the hotel;
- how to buy a bus ticket;
- what’s an extra charge for luggage;
- how to find a city cab when you get off the bus.
It takes about 20 minutes to sign an agreement and pick up the car.

You will like driving around Barcelona. The road traffic is perfectly organized thanks to the Ring Road, which will take you to the old part of the city and the suburbs. The Ring Road transitions into the B20 expressway (toll highway). If you do not want to pay but you still want to visit small towns and fancy villages, choose the freeway no. 11 that runs in the same direction, along the coast.
There are many roundabouts with up to seven exits. The general rule is to follow the signs and give way to those in the traffic circle.
Parking in Barcelona
In Barcelona, the cars should be parked only in the direction of traffic. You cannot park in places with yellow markings on the road.
In the city centre, only paid parking spaces are available from 1 to 3 euros per hour to be paid at parking meters. Outside the city centre, you can park for free.
Gas stations in Spain
There are many gas stations adjacent to residential buildings in Barcelona.
Some are manual and some are automatic. First you refuel your car, then you pay.
If you're in a hurry to catch your flight and don't have time to fill up your rental car in the city, don't worry. There’s a Galp gas station right at the airport, at the car entrance (there is a sign).
Mobile service and internet
Travelling without a mobile service is simply uncomfortable. The popular mobile network operators among tourists are Vodafone, Yoigo, and Orange. When buying ask for a “tarjeta” (card), which means you are a traveller and need a prepaid plan. You can buy a SIM card at a telecom retail store or “locutorio” (something between a mobile phone store and an internet café).
