Mauritius is a small island. This destination is chosen by fans of clean sandy beaches and picturesque landscapes. The transport network is well-developed here, but traveling around the island by bus is not very convenient. Public transport does not always run on schedule, and transfers are often required. Planning routes and waiting takes a lot of time. Car rental in Mauritius makes getting around the island more convenient.

Car rental prices in Mauritius are relatively low, and most companies operate without requiring a deposit. It's easy to find an option for solo travel as well as for trips with friends or family.

What You Need to Rent a Car

To book a car in Mauritius, you will need a bank card. An advance payment of 15–20% of the order cost will be charged. The list of required documents is standard:

  • Passport;
  • Valid driver’s license.

Most rental companies in Mauritius prefer to rent vehicles to drivers over 21 years old with at least 3 years of driving experience. However, on our website, you can find options for renters from 18 years old with at least 1 year of driving experience. To see available cars, activate the appropriate filter.

Traffic Rules

Driving in Mauritius is on the left side of the road, but it's fairly easy to get used to. Traffic jams can occur in the central part of the island during rush hour. There are no complicated interchanges. The traffic is calm. Most drivers follow traffic rules. The speed limit in the city is 40 km/h, outside the city — 80 km/h. On highways, the recommended speed is 100–110 km/h.

The amount of the fine for speeding depends on how much the limit is exceeded. On average, it is €25–150. More serious violations may result in stricter penalties.

If it is the first time you will be driving a right-hand drive car, you had better choose automatic transmission.

Fuel Stations and Parking

There are no problems with fuel stations on the island. Shell stations are the most common. You can pay with card or cash. Interestingly, there is no fuel classification by type or grade in the country: there is only one option — gasoline.

There are plenty of parking spaces. Almost all of them are free. The exceptions are parking lots near large shopping centers or stores.

  1. Specify the rental dates and the pickup and drop-off locations.
  2. Select a car. Using filters will speed up the process. The website allows sorting by brand and year of manufacture, transmission and drivetrain type, engine size and fuel consumption, and deposit payment method. Click on the car photo to view details.
  3. Add optional features if needed. You can include a child seat or booster, additional insurance, the "Second driver in contract" option, and more.

After payment, we will send you an electronic receipt and voucher by email. The memo will contain all necessary information and contact details of the rental company.

What is the right way to pick up and drop off the rental car?

To pick up your car, you must have car a rental voucher (can be in electronic form) and the originals of your driving licence and passport or ID.

  • Carefully inspect the vehicle from all sides and mark any existing damage on the inspection diagram.

Take detailed photos or video of the car when picking it up or dropping it off, just in case.

  • Read and sign the rental agreement. Ask the rental agent for clarifications, if needed.
  • Pay the remaining amount and the deposit.

It usually takes 15-20 minutes to pick up your car.

To drop off your rental car, arrive to the meeting point in time. The car must be clean and filled to the level it had when you picked up the car. Your rental agent will inspect the car and sign your copy of the drop-off report.

Remember to take all personal belongings out of the car.

It takes about 10 minutes to drop off the car.

Where to Go by Rental Car

There are many attractions in Mauritius that can be visited by rental car:

  2. Casela Zoo. The largest in Mauritius. It houses many exotic animals living in spacious enclosures. You can take a walking tour with lions and tigers.
  3. Chamarel Waterfall. 105 meters of rushing water cascading down a steep slope. Great place for photos. A KIA Picanto is suitable for this trip.
  4. Port Louis. The island’s capital, a cultural and entertainment hub. A city with an authentic central market and a beautiful waterfront.
  5. La Vanille Park. The opposite of Casela Zoo. Quite compact but interesting. Its main inhabitants are giant Seychelles tortoises. You can visit La Vanille in a rental Suzuki Celerio.

Helpful Recommendations

Here are some helpful tips for renting a car in Mauritius:

Print the Voucher

When booking online, the voucher is sent to your email. Is a printed version necessary? Print it just in case. If your phone dies, you'll have a paper copy. This will save you unnecessary trouble.

Check if a Car Wash is Required

Some rental companies require the car to be returned clean inside and out. Keep this in mind. A car wash will cost less than the penalty for not meeting this requirement.

Inspect the Car Before Rental

Inspect the vehicle. Take photos and videos of any damage. Record all details in the inspection report. Also note how much fuel is in the tank: the car must be returned with the same amount. If there is less fuel, you’ll have to pay the difference based on the rental company’s rates. If there's more, you won’t be reimbursed.
